Professor Jian Zuo from the University of Adelaide, Australia, Delivers a Lecture on Plastic Waste Management: International Experiences in Circular Economy and Sustainable Development in the Construction Industry

On the afternoon of December 22, 2025, to broaden faculty and student international perspectives and promote academic exchange in the fields of sustainable development and circular economy, the School of Public Policy and Administration at Nanchang University invited Professor Jian Zuo, Vice Dean of the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Adelaide, Australia, and an internationally renowned expert in sustainable construction, to deliver a special lecture titled “Plastic Waste Management in Australia.” The session was chaired by Professor Luo Lan, Director of the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program. Professor Zuo is a core member of the Expert Committee for the Green Building Rating System in Australia and has long been dedicated to research on low-carbon buildings, urban ecology, and the resource recovery of construction waste. With a wealth of academic achievements, he enjoys a high international reputation in the field of sustainable construction.

The lecture focused on the global issue of plastic waste recycling in the construction industry. Professor Zuo systematically outlined the overall landscape of plastic production, use, and disposal worldwide, highlighting that the construction sector has become a significant source of plastic waste growth. Drawing on Australias practices and challenges, he analyzed typical construction-related plastics such as PVC pipes and PET packaging, examining the practical bottlenecks in recycling technologies, industrial chain integration, policy mechanisms, and the balance of economic benefits. Professor Zuo also shared his research teams latest explorations in the resource recovery and high-value utilization of plastic waste. For example, they have optimized pre-treatment processes, such as local shredding and pelletizing, to reduce transportation costs and improve the quality of recycled materials. During the interactive session, faculty and students engaged in lively and in-depth discussions with Professor Zuo on topics including differences in waste-sorting practices between China and Australia, how circularity indicators can be integrated into green building rating systems, and the synergy between waste incineration and material recycling.

The lecture provided faculty and students with a high-level platform to engage directly with a leading international scholar. It not only deepened participants understanding of circular economy and sustainable construction but also fostered the exchange of academic ideas and international experiences, positively contributing to the development of related disciplines and the cultivation of talent.
